Your domain name is often the first thing a potential customer sees. It shows up in your email address, your business cards, your Google listing, and every piece of content you publish. Getting it right matters — but it doesn’t have to be complicated.
Keep It Short and Memorable
The best domain names are easy to say out loud, easy to spell, and easy to remember. If you have to explain how to spell it every time you give it out, it’s too complicated. Aim for two words or fewer when possible.
Go for .com When You Can
Other extensions (.net, .co, .io, .biz) work fine and are increasingly common, but .com is still the default assumption in most people’s heads. If your preferred .com is taken, consider whether an alternative name might be better than a different extension.
Include a Keyword If It Fits Naturally
Having your primary service or location in your domain can help with local SEO. Something like austinlandscaping.com or atxplumbing.com signals to both search engines and visitors what you do and where you do it. Don’t force it — an awkward domain with keywords is worse than a clean branded one without them.
Consider Your Austin Identity
Austin has a strong sense of local identity. Many businesses lean into that with domains that include “Austin,” “ATX,” or references to local neighborhoods and culture. If you’re building a brand rooted in the Austin community, that local flavor in your domain can resonate with your audience.
Avoid Hyphens and Numbers
Hyphens and numbers create confusion when spoken aloud (“is that a dash or a hyphen?”) and are associated with spammy domains. If the clean version of your preferred name is taken, find a different name rather than adding a hyphen.
Check Social Media Availability
Before registering, search for the same name on Instagram, Facebook, X, and LinkedIn. Brand consistency across domains and social handles makes you look more professional and easier to find.
Register It Quickly
Good domain names disappear fast. Once you’ve settled on a name, register it immediately — domain registration costs around $10–15/year and it’s one of the cheapest business investments you’ll make.
